Valid for life, the Diploma is aimed at all those working in the medical profession who need to work and communicate in French with patients, their families, as well as nursing and medical staff.
This diploma certifies your ability to use French effectively, both orally and in writing, in a variety of professional communication situations, such as:
- completing a medical file, designing a prevention aid, completing a care protocol or writing a prevention note on health risks
- explaining a medical procedure, speaking on a public health subject to a non-specialist audience
The exam for the Diploma in French for Healthcare is taken online, followed by an oral interview.
It consists of two parts:
01. Understanding and Processing Information
- Via computer
- Duration between 45 mins and 2 hrs depending on level
- Depending on the level, 3 to 7 activities (professional situations) based on the processing of authentic written documents (e.g. product sheet, graphs, etc.) and/or audio files (e.g. answering machine messages, a debate between experts, etc.) and on the written production of a professional document (e.g. e-mail, report, etc.)
- The number and nature of the documents to be processed or produced vary according to level
02. Oral Interaction
- Conversation (role-playing) with an examiner
- Duration between 5 and 15 mins depending on level, with preparation time
- 2 activities (professional scenarios) involving oral interaction (conversation to inform or convince) or oral production (e.g. presentation of a product)
- All the necessary information is provided in the subject line
Description of diplomas by level
The Diploma in French for Healthcare is available in 3 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): B1, B2 and C1.
Diploma in French for Healthcare B1
Level
The Diploma in French for Healthcare B1 validates competence in French at CEFR level B1.
It certifies independent-level competence in French, enabling users to understand and express themselves in everyday social and professional situations.
The holder of this diploma can carry out routine acts of professional communication in a current or generally predictable context.

Understanding and Processing Information
- Processing written information:
1) Understand the characteristics of drugs in order to prescribe them to a patient,
2) Understand and fill in a liaison form in order to transfer a patient,
3) Understand the various components of health education in order to produce a presentation aid - Processing oral information:
1) Understand instructions given by a healthcare professional and complete a care protocol,
2) Understand information given by a patient during a consultation and update a medical record - Interacting in writing: Be able to recommend a patient to a specialist

- Activity 1: Informing patients about their treatment, advising them and answering their questions
- Activity 2: Inform a non-specialist audience about a public health issue and related preventive measures

Understanding and Processing Information
You can understand the essential elements of professional written documents such as patient files, medication sheets, infographic documents, care protocols, liaison sheets and public health data sheets.
You can understand the gist of information and requests from patients, colleagues or the nursing staff around them.
You can write prescriptions, various parts of patient files, health education materials and letters of recommendation.
Oral Interaction
You can establish social and professional contacts to inform patients about their treatment, advise them and answer their questions, or inform a non-specialist audience about a public health issue and related preventive measures.
Diploma in French for Healthcare B2 / C1
Level
The Diploma in French for Healthcare B2/C1 is a single exam which, depending on your performance, will award a diploma at independent level B2 or advanced level C1 of the CEFR.
At level B2, the holder of this diploma can perform written and spoken professional communication tasks in all standard situations in their professional environment, including those involving a certain degree of unexpectedness.
At level C1, the learner can also identify, understand and take account of information that is relevant to the task but expressed implicitly or allusively. They can reformulate them, if necessary, maintaining a high degree of conciseness and precision in their expression and adapting their speech to the emotional state of their interlocutor (for example, by integrating formulations expressing empathy).

Total examination time: 2 hrs 30 mins
Understanding and Processing Information
- Processing written information: Write a memo to a health authority on a health risk to be prevented, based on a documentary file
- Processing oral information: Report on a specialist intervention on a health topic
- Interacting in writing: As a specialist, write a letter to a general practitioner with test results and recommendations
Oral Interaction
- Activity 1: Explain the prescribed examination to a patient, then answer questions and reassure them
- Activity 2: Present a disease and health initiatives (e.g. as part of a fundraising campaign for research)

Understanding and Processing Information
You can include the essential elements of documentary files on public health topics, a captioned anatomical plate, a medical act/examination/procedure description sheet.
You’ll be able to understand the gist of programs on a health topic, or questions from patients concerned about a medical procedure/examination/intervention.
You can write a note on a health risk, a report on a health topic, or a letter transmitting results and recommendations.
Oral Interaction
You can establish social and professional contacts to present and explain a medical procedure/examination/intervention to a patient and reassure them, present a disease and health actions.

Who is the Diploma in French for Business recognized by?
Academic recognition
Diplomas in French for Business are offered at over a hundred universities and business schools worldwide, including the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna in Austria, the École Hôtellière de Lausanne in Switzerland, Bocconi University of Milan in Italy, Chosun University in South Korea, Podomoro University in Indonesia, Georgetown, DePaul and Vanderbilt Universities in the USA, and many others.
CEMS (The Global Alliance in Management Education) recognizes them for the validation of students’ French language skills at its 33 schools.
National recognition
Diplomas in French for Business are recognized by several ministries in Europe (France, Switzerland, Italy, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Austria…).
In France, Diplomas in French for Business are also recognized by the French Ministry of the Interior to validate your level of French when applying for a residence permit or naturalization in France.
Unlike the TEF, they are valid for life and will add value to your CV.
International recognition
The Diplomas in French for Business B1, B2 and C1 have also been awarded the European ALTE label, which gives them European and international scientific recognition.
